A Room Reimagined: A Bold Bedroom & Bathroom Transformation in Carlsbad

Same bed. Same handmade nightstands. A completely new personality.

Great interior design doesn’t mean getting rid of everything you own. Sometimes, the best place to start is with what you already love.

There’s a misconception about hiring an interior designer that I’d love to clear up.

You do NOT have to start from scratch.

You don’t have to replace perfectly good furniture, throw away sentimental pieces, or suddenly develop a taste for beige.

In fact, some of my favorite design projects involve working with things my clients already own.

And this bedroom and bathroom transformation in Carlsbad, California, is a perfect example.

Before and After!

The Challenge: Make It New Without Replacing Everything

When I started working with my clients on their primary bedroom and bathroom renovation, we had a few things we wanted to keep.

The existing bed was staying. So were the floating nightstands. Remarkably, her husband made all of those pieces himself! Meanwhile I am over here with a “Honey Do List” a mile long.

Why replace something perfectly functional, especially when it has a personal story?

Instead, we built the new design around those existing pieces, introducing bold colors, dramatic finishes, and custom details that would completely change how the spaces looked and felt.

The goal wasn’t to erase what was there.

It was to make everything feel intentional.

A Bedroom With Some Serious Personality

Let’s talk about that wallpaper.

Deep plum, burgundy, and dramatic florals against a dark background.

Not exactly your standard coastal California bedroom. If you know Monique Mason, you know why this bedroom is so uniquely MO.

And that’s precisely why I love it. And her.

Meet Monique. A personality this colorful deserves a bedroom to match. 🍷

We used the wallpaper to create a statement wall behind the existing white bed, immediately giving the room a completely different personality.

Rich purple bedding, layered textures, and thoughtfully selected accessories brought the palette together.

We also updated the ceiling fan and incorporated pendant lighting to add warmth and interest.

The result is dramatic without feeling overwhelming, and personal without feeling cluttered.

Because who decided every bedroom in Southern California needs to be white, beige, and vaguely reminiscent of a beach house?

Not me.

The Bathroom Needed to Join the Party

Modern bathroom remodel featuring a navy blue vanity, black slat accent wall, illuminated round mirror, marble-look tile, and plum floral accessories designed by Haus of Heidi.

Bold details, moody colors, and a little personality. This bathroom transformation pairs a deep navy vanity with dramatic black accents and rich plum tones for a space that’s anything but ordinary.

Since we were renovating the bedroom and adjoining bathroom at the same time, it was important that the two spaces felt connected.

Not identical.

Connected.

We expanded the vanity area and incorporated custom cabinetry, creating a more functional space with a completely refreshed look.

Custom dimensional wall paneling behind the round mirror added texture and architectural interest.

And rather than treating the water closet as an afterthought, we carried the same floral wallpaper from the bedroom into that space.

It’s an unexpected detail that makes the entire suite feel cohesive.

One of my favorite little design decisions involved the existing built-in wall jewelry cabinet. Which Richard also built himself. Talk about a keeper!

We used leftover wallpaper to customize the panels, concealing the contents and tying it into the rest of the room. We also matted artwork with the wallpaper scraps!

Sometimes the smallest details are the ones that make me happiest.

Bringing the wallpaper into smaller spaces and unusual applications was so much fun! The smallest details are what make the en suite feel SO CUSTOM.

Design should tell your story. By incorporating cherished pet portraits into custom frames featuring the same bold floral wallpaper used throughout the space, we created a deeply personal gallery wall that feels intentional, cohesive, and completely one of a kind.

Let’s Talk About That Tile

For the bathroom, we selected dramatic 24-by-48-inch tile featuring purple and ivory veining.

Large-format tile makes a statement, and the movement in this particular selection complemented the rich colors throughout the bedroom.

We paired it with a custom hexagon tile shower floor, introducing another layer of texture and visual interest.

The combination feels bold, cohesive, and anything but ordinary. And that’s the beauty of designing adjoining spaces together. Each room can have its own personality while still feeling like part of the same home.

Custom walk-in shower featuring dramatic purple and black hexagon floor tiles, marble-look porcelain wall tiles, matte black fixtures, and a built-in corner shelf.

It’s all in the details. Rich plum and black hexagon tiles bring unexpected personality to this custom shower, while dramatic purple veined walls and matte black fixtures keep the design sophisticated and cohesive.

Good Design Isn’t About Buying More Stuff

Here’s something I wish more homeowners understood.

Hiring an interior designer doesn’t automatically mean replacing everything you own.

Sometimes it means keeping the bed but changing everything around it. Sometimes it means investing in custom cabinetry while repurposing existing furniture. Sometimes it means using leftover wallpaper to solve a completely different design problem. And sometimes it means having someone look at your space and see possibilities you hadn’t considered.

That’s the part of interior design I love most.

Working with what you have, identifying what’s missing, and creating something that feels entirely new without starting over.

Your Home Should Look Like YOU.

At Haus of Heidi, I believe your home should reflect your personality, not whatever happens to be trending on Pinterest this week.

If you love color, let’s use color.

If you have furniture with sentimental value, let’s find a way to incorporate it.

If you want a dramatic floral wallpaper in your Carlsbad bedroom?

Well, clearly, I’m your girl.

Whether you’re renovating a primary suite, refreshing a living room, or trying to make your existing furniture work in a new home, thoughtful interior design can make an enormous difference.

And no, you don’t need to replace everything to get there.
